How to use the Citation Builder
Generate five citations using the North Carolina State University Citation Builder.
- In the citation builder, choose the type of resource you would like to cite and the style. In this exercise, the style will be MLA 8.
- Choose the appropriate tab for print or digital (if you used a printed copy choose print; if you found the resource on the web, choose digital). For this exercise, assume that all the resources provided on the Research Paper Resources are print resources, except the last one which is a web page.
- Type in all the information that you know into the appropriate blanks. If one of the requested pieces of information was not provided (for example, there might not be an author on a website), leave it blank. The citation will be generated without it.
- Submit your entry.
- Copy the citation that was generated, paste it on the worksheet.
- Click the X and then the clear the form button in the citation generator and begin again with the next resource’s information repeat steps 1-5 above.
Formatting the Works Cited Page
You must format the citations correctly according to MLA style instructions.
- You will need to put the citations in alphabetical order by the word that appears first in each citation. To rearrange the citations, use cut and paste.
- Remove blank lines that appear between the citations, being careful not to delete any of your citations, but making sure that each citation begins on a new line.
- Hold down the Control key on your keyboard and press the letter T on your keyboard at the same time. This will format the citation with a hanging indent, where the first line hangs out over the rest.
- Hold down the Control key on your keyboard again and press the number 2 at the same time. This will double space your citations.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the rest of your generated citations.
