Central Question: What were the key domestic and foreign issues of the George H.W. Bush administration?
Assuming power in the wake of the widely popular Ronald Reagan proved to be a daunting challenge for President George H. W. Bush. On the domestic front, Bush struggled to manage an economy plagued by a recession and a rising national debt. Internationally, Saddam Hussein's invasion of neighboring Kuwait ushered the United States into the Persian Gulf War as the U.S.-led coalition sought to protect an international friend and oil interests abroad. Despite the difficulties, Bush managed to win bi-partisan support of several major legislative acts, including the Clean Air Act and Americans with Disabilities Act. Significantly, the Bush administration also oversaw the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Though Bush only served one term in office, he managed to accomplish several notable domestic and foreign policy achievements that left a lasting legacy on the United States for generations to come.
