Members of the United States Marine Corps raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 after the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most costly battles of the Pacific campaign during World War II. More than 6,000 United States Marines fell during the capture of the island. Despite the losses, this picture of the "raising of the flag" became a symbol of hope, perseverance, and patriotism.

While the Allied forces were fighting Germany and Italy in Europe, a very different war was being waged in the Pacific against the Axis power of Japan. The Pacific war was primarily naval, conducted mostly by American forces, and was much more brutal than the fighting in Europe. Although Allied forces focused their attention on Hitler first, the U.S. continuously pursued the Japanese aggressors throughout the course of the war.
