Introduction
Crime is one of the most glaring examples of deviance. When criminal activity occurs, especially violent crime, we are reminded (as functional theorists would say) of why certain acts are considered deviant in the first place. In this lesson, you will be looking at a variety of crime classifications in statistics. You will also learn the differences of how our criminal justice system views crime and how sociologists view crime. Crime in the United States can be divided into different categories. You will learn about how crime is classified and categorized by various groups.
Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Contrast violent crime, property crime, and victimless crime with white-collar crime.
- Define different types of criminal activity that exist
The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 4.1.
