Review

There are other ways to generate electrical power using the moving magnetic fields in a generator. A geothermal power plant uses heat generated deep beneath the surface of the earth to provide the energy to make steam and drive the turbines. Wind power and solar power are also useful alternatives in some areas of the world.

Tasks

Watch the PBS Learning Energy Sources video to learn more about energy. Use the username access@access.edu and the password Access#1. You should read the discussion questions before watching the video and you should take notes about the different energy sources. After watching the video, save your answers to a Word document and place it in the 4.02 Energy Sources Dropbox.

  2. Choose one renewable energy source and one non-renewable energy source. What are the benefits and drawbacks of using each source?

  3. Why are the renewable energy sources currently being used considered to be unable to meet our total energy needs?

  4. What is the main source of energy in the United States?

  5. Think about all of the situations in which you use energy in your everyday life. What is the source of the energy in each case? If you don't know, how could you find out?
