Introduction

Have you ever had a string of lights that when one bulb went out or broke the entire strand went out?

If so, these bulbs were connected using a series circuit. There are two types of electric circuits: series and parallel. They each have specific properties based on how the resistors are connected. We will look at series circuits in this lesson and continue with parallel circuits in the following lesson.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Identify and describe series circuits.
  • Construct basic series circuits.
  • Describe what happens when voltage and resistance is changed in a series circuit.

Enduring Understandings

  • Electricity is a form of energy that can be transformed by moving electric charges doing work in various devices.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Physical Science standards: 10.
