Introduction

You have probably heard the terms acid and base used before. Many times when people think of an acid, they think of something that can burn their skin or burn a hole in their clothes. While there are some acids that can do that, you come in contact with acids on a daily basis — many of which you can eat and drink! Look at the following examples of some common acids:

lemonade, orange juice, white vinegar

Lemonade, orange juice, and white vinegar are common acids.

This lesson will introduce you to acids and bases.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Define acid, base, strong acid, strong base, weak acid, and weak base.
  • Recognize characteristics and examples of acids and bases.

Enduring Understandings

  • Chemical reactions occur constantly all around us.
  • Acids, bases, and the pH scale are important for understanding the environment, everyday chemicals, and processes in our bodies.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Physical Science standards: 4.
