Introduction

After you finish this lesson, you will be able to recognize that there are chemical bonds and chemical reactions going on everywhere. Sometimes the reactions are fast and sometimes they are slow, like rust.

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Describe how atoms combine to form compounds.
  • Contrast the formation of ionic, covalent, and polar covalent bonds based on the transfer or sharing of valence electrons.
  • Identify formulas of compounds.
  • Compare and contrast decomposition, synthesis, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion reactions.
  • Distinguish between endothermic and exothermic reactions.

Enduring Understandings

  • The properties and phases of matter are dependent upon the types of bonds or forces that comprise the matter, as well as the forces acting upon it.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Physical Science standards: 1

This lesson incorporates the following Literacy Standards: R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R10, W1, W2, W3, W4, W9, and W10.
