Introduction

Food habits and consumption trends are those factors in our society that determine what we cultivate, grow, market, and sell to the public. What influences these processes is consumer demand. You are a consumer, just like millions of other citizens, which create a diverse set of needs to fulfill.

We will take a look at what these needs are and how we choose our food based on these needs. We will also examine the government's role as a provider of information to the public and how that influences our nation's food supply and ultimately the types of food we eat.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • List factors that influence personal food selections.
  • Identify community nutrition concerns in the past, present, and future.
  • Discuss factors involved in personal food choices during particular life situations.
  • Define national health & wellness goals in the United States.
