It is difficult to know the gender of nouns. There is no rhyme or reason as to why they have the articles- they just do! Just remember that all nouns have gender. Think of this as a technicality of the language. Having a gender does not mean that certain words were created by a male or female, it is simply "branding" the word (and knowing about gender now will come in handy for lots of things later in the course). Make sure that you are learning the gender of the noun with all of your vocab memorization because it is essential in writing sentences.

The definite articles are the words in front of the noun. There are four definite articles. The definite article form depends on the gender of the noun and the number (whether the noun is plural or not).

der Mann - masculine

die Frau - feminine

das Kind - neuter

die Kinder - plural (notice that this article is the same as the feminine, which shows just how important it is to memorize the gender!)
