The verb "wissen" has a stem change, but it is not exactly like the stem-changing verbs you've learned about before. Look at the forms in the chart below and see what you notice. Did you notice that all the plural forms are perfectly regular? (This is true for ALL verbs except sein! That's a great thing to keep in mind) Did you notice 2 changes in the singular? The stem changes in all the singular forms, not just the du and er,sie,es forms. Also, there is no ending at all on the ich and er,sie,es forms. Look at some of the example "wissen" sentences below: Weißt du, wie alt er ist?Do you know how old he is? Ich weiß, dass er 12 Jahre alt ist.I know that he is 12 years old. Weiß er die Telefonummer? Does he know her number? Er weiß, ihre Telefonnummer nicht. He does not know her phone number. A good hint for the use of "kennen" is that the answer should either be a noun or pronoun. For example: Kennst du den neuen Nachbarn?Do you know the new neighbor? Ja, ich kenne ihn.Yes, I know him. Ich kenne meinen Nachbar nicht.I do not know the neighbor. Kennt er die Stadt Remscheid?Does he know the city Remscheid? |
