Introduction

Also in the Region of Aquitaine, but further down the coast towards Spain is the city of Biarritz.

Biarritz - the birth place of surfing in Europe - is a city that attracts many people for the annual Surf Festival. Each year, more than 150,000 spectators from all over the world gather for a week of competition and fun. Sports fans can also enjoy the rare treat of a game of rugby in the Parc des Sports Aguiléra.

Biarritz is in the area that is often referred to as Pays Basque or Basque Country.

The area became quite famous when the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, fell in love with it and built a palace there. That palace is now a world class hotel called the Hôtel du Palais.
