Types
There are many types of impression evidence. These include tire tracks, tool marks, footwear, and bite marks. We will concentrate on tire tracks, footwear, and tool marks in this lesson.
Impression evidence is created when an object retains another object's characteristics through direct contact. In order for an impression to be left behind, an object must have enough force to leave an impression.
There are several different methods of collecting impression evidence. A 2-D impression must be documented using a photograph. Fingerprint powder may also be used on this type of impression evidence. The impression can then be photographed or lifted.
A 3-D impression is photographed and casted using either dental stone or other substance to preserve the dimensional characteristics of the print.
