Introduction

Earlier, you learned that a population is a group of organisms of the same species that live in a specific area. Then, you learned how the human population has changed through history and the factors and historical events that contributed to those patterns of increase.

In this lesson, you will learn that human population growth differs around the world and there are a number of factors that contribute population growth trends in each area. Populations have different characteristics that help define them.

Go to the US Census Bureau: State and County Quick Facts to see different characteristics that are used to measure Alabama's population. You can also check out your county or city's population. Click on Browse Data Sets for Alabama at the top right corner of the table. Then, click on Demographic Profile to see how Alabama's population is broken down by age and sex.
