Introduction

At the end of this lesson, student will be able to:

  • Explore types of soil in your area.
  • Classify types of soil.
  • Relate particle size to soil texture and type of sand, silt, or clay.

Lessons 2.01-2.05 have given you an introduction to soil. In this lab, you will be conducting a simple experiment to determine what types of soil are in your area.

Soils have different textures and therefore feel very different when you touch them. Soils are frequently divided into three types: sand, silt, and clay. Each one is distinct because of the differing particle size. Sand is large while clay is much smaller. Have fun determining which type you have in your area.
