Task

Open the 3.02 Comparing/Contrasting Chart.  Look at both poems and note the speakers’ differing attitudes toward love.  Fill in the chart for each stanza.  Save your work and submit to the 3.02 Comparing/Contrasting Chart Dropbox.

You are going to read two commentaries on the poems, annotate the articles, paraphrase the important passages, and write an essay about your findings.

Essay topic:  After reading the two poems, “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” and “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd,” analyze the message and tone of the speaker’s of each poem.  Comment on the relationship between the poems and consider why certain images may have been chosen.  Read two commentaries on the poems to give you insight.  In a well-crafted three paragraph essay, compose your answers.

If you want to use any of the information directly from the poem or the passages in your essay, you must give the source credit called in-text citation.  You will also include a Works Cited page with four sources on it:  the two articles and the two poems. As you are reading, make notes or highlight the important passages. After you have had a thorough reading and understanding of your articles, begin to draft your essay.  Use the 3.02 Compare and Contrast Essay Rubric as a guide.

Use the steps below to edit and correct your work before submitting.

  1. Save your work as a document.

  2. Run the spelling and grammar check within your word processing application.

  3. Next, go to the Hemingway Editor.

  4. Then, paste your work into the space provided and select Edit.

  5. Review the summary on the left. You can review the readability and the expand the information under Words to see the number of words, sentences, and paragraphs.

  6. Review the information on use of adverbs, voice, and hard-to-read sentences to see where you can improve your writing. Hover over underlined words and terms to look for alternatives. You can make edits directly in this space.

  7. If you make any edits in the Hemingway Editor, make sure to copy and paste your work back into your document.

Once you finish planning, drafting, and revising, submit your final essay to 3.02 Compare/Contrast Essay Dropbox.
