By 1860, the differences between the North and South had become so great that Northerners and Southerners felt as if they belonged to two different countries instead of one United States.

Visit Civil War 150 to learn more about the the people who fought in the American Civil War, how they died, the weapons they used, the battles they fought, and many other topics.

The next author you will study is Ambrose Bierce, who served on the front-line in the Civil War. In his short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," the story takes place during the Civil War in northern Alabama. An occurrence means an incident or event. So use your skills to predict what you think will occur, or take place, at the bridge.
