Aunt Alexandra has taken it upon herself to come and live with Atticus, Jem, and Scout. The children are unhappy with the new living arrangement, and Atticus remains neutral. Aunt Alexandra has informed Atticus her presence is needed so she can help teach the children some refinement, especially Scout. One of her purposes for moving in is to help Scout learn to act like a young lady. Another purpose is to help Atticus with the children because he will be spending so much time with his duties of the trial. The kids are unaware they need any refinement, and Scout is more than reluctant to take on manners of a young lady. She is partial to her tomboy ways.
