Introduction

Another tool that adds interest and coherence to writing is parallel structure. Parallelism is the use of words or phrases that have a similar grammatical form. Parallelism helps writers create a consistent rhythm in their writing.

Which sentence below is parallel?

  1. The horse galloped across the meadow, skidded to a halt at the fence, and jolted his rider out of the saddle.

  2. The horse galloped across the meadow, then skidded to a halt at the fence, and gave his rider a jolt.

The first sentence is parallel. Look at the verbs and their grammatical format: The horse galloped across the meadow, skidded to a halt at the fence, and jolted his rider out of the saddle. Notice that each phrase begins with a verb ending in -ed. In your writing, use strong verbs, and make sure your sentences are parallel.

In this lesson, you will learn what parallel structure is, how to recognize it, and how to incorporate it into your own writing.
