A subject and its verb must agree in number in each sentence. The word number refers to the form of a word that shows whether it is singular or plural. To make verbs agree with a subject in number, remember these two simple rules:
a singular subject needs a singular verb;
a plural subject needs a plural verb.
Make sure not to get mixed up if there is an intervening phrase between the subject and the verb. Look at the examples below.

Sick in bed, she | sleeps all day.
