Have you ever considered all the books written by authors using simply pen and paper? And how long it must have taken them to complete using such simple tools?
Of course, the invention of the typewriter in the late 1800s was a giant leap from pen and paper, but it was not until 1960s that the innovations of IBM led to the concept of word processing.
Some of those original features we would recognize today, but early equipment was quite limited.
