Introduction

Absolute Value Functions text version | Open Absolute Value Functions in a new tab

Lesson Objectives

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Graph functions expressed symbolically, and show key features of the graph, by hand in simple cases.Graph piecewise-defined functions, including absolute value functions.
  • Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function.
  • Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, or by verbal descriptions).
  • Identify the effect on the graph of replacing f(x) by f(x) + k, and f(x + k) for specific values of k (both positive and negative); find the value of k given the graphs.

Enduring Understandings

  • Operations create relationships between numbers.
  • The language of mathematics is communicated through specialized vocabulary and symbols used to represent and describe mathematical ideas, generalizations, and relationships.
  • By describing patterns using mathematics, we can make predictions and generalizations, analyze situations in everyday life, and sort and classify things.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Algebra II with Statistics standards: 15, 16, 20, and 20a..
