The "Splendid Little War" between the United States and Spain proved to be a war of the ages. In a mere four months the world witnessed the fall of a historic power- Spain, and the rise of a new superpower-the United States.  This transfer of power from the "old guard" to the "new" involved other historic markings as well. The emergence of Teddy Roosevelt as a national figure during the war, and the exchange of territory at the end of the conflict, each left a lasting effect on the United States and the world at large for generations to come.
