In 1956, Autherine Lucy became the first African American admitted to the University of Alabama. Later, in 1963, Vivian Malone and James Hood attempted integration again. This time, Governor Wallace made his infamous “stand in the schoolhouse door” to visibly demonstrate to the nation his opposition to integration at the University.  The stand, however, was only symbolic because a deal had already been reached to admit the two students.
