The destruction created by World War II, completely devastated the Asian nations of China and Korea. The landscape, economy, and people were all equally affected by the terror inflicted by the Japanese. The critical years following the war truly tested the region. The people in China, who blamed their Nationalist leader for the weak resistance to Japan, were eager for a change and new beginning. As a result, communism was able to flourish and the revolution was able to succeed. In Korea, however, Allied leadership played a more defining role. In South Korea, democratic ideals were established under American leadership, while communist ideals were established in North Korea under Soviet leadership. Following Allied withdrawal from Korea, communist aggressors from North Korea invaded South Korea. Determined to "contain" the communist threat, western countries responded this time through the United Nations pledging full support to "restore peace" to the region.
