Truman signing the NATO treaty. In the aftermath of the Berlin crisis, the U.S. solidified its commitment to containment by joining with ten other western democracies in the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On August 24, 1949, Truman signed the treaty putting NATO into effect, observed by foreign ministers from eight NATO countries.
