A column of Axis prisoners in the African desert, 1942.

After the signing of the Atlantic Charter, Allied forces turned their attention to North Africa; an area that had been under Axis control since 1936.  Having decided that it was better to gain control over the valuable Suez Canal in Egypt, while also distracting the Germans from their offensive against the Soviets, American ground forces saw action for the first time with the Allied invasion of Algeria and Morocco, in 1942. While American and British forces battled the Axis Powers, led by German General Erwin Rommel in the West, a singular British effort, led by General Bernard Montgomery, fought the Axis Powers in the East. Eventually the two forces united in Tunisia, in 1943, to force the Axis Powers of Africa once and for all.

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

– Winston Churchill after the British defeat of Axis troops in Africa in 1942
