Brigham Young

Brigham Young (1801-1877) became the leader of the Mormons after Joseph Smith's death. He led them on their westward search for land where they would not be persecuted.

While settlers were lured to California and Santa Fe by dreams of becoming wealthy, the early inhabitants of Oregon and Utah came for much different reasons. These two areas were both settled initially for religious reasons. In Oregon, a group of Christian missionaries started settlements in the region to witness to the Native Americans living there. A few years later, Mormon families hoping to find refuge in the secluded areas of the West, founded many successful and vibrant communities in what eventually became Utah.
