The First Battle of Bull Run is considered the Civil War's first major battle. Did you know that at the Battle of First Bull Run or Manassas, between 8,000 and 10,000 bullets were fired for every man killed or wounded?

 

Bull Run

After the fall of Fort Sumter in April 1861, both the Union and Confederacy concentrated their efforts on the mobilization of troops. The Confederate capital had been moved from Montgomery, Alabama to Richmond, Virginia and Confederate General Pierre Beauregard had positioned his troops to defend the capital. Union General Irvin McDowell hesitantly marched his 37,000 Union troops into Virginia. Most Americans envisioned one or two major skirmishes between the two forces, resulting in quick victories, and a quick end to the war. These thoughts were soon dashed as the reality of war set in.
