Opening Word Documents in Google Docs
By default, Google Docs opens Microsoft documents in a compatibility mode. Some items might not be visible or displayed properly when the compatibility mode is used. However, converting the document to a Google document should correct any display issues.
If you see a "W" icon in the top left corner (as shown below), this indicates that the document has been opened in compatibility mode.
To convert the document to a Google Doc, select File -> Save as Google Docs.
After converting the document to Google Docs, the "W" icon will no longer be present.
