Toussaint L'Ouverture |
Simon Bolivar |

The three men depicted above were instrumental in working toward independence in Latin America.
- When and in what countries did they live?
- What actions did they take?
- What were the outcomes?
You are going to complete a webquest activity and collect the key information that explains the role each of these men played in bringing independence to their respective countries. As you read through the following site, you do not have to complete the webquest questions. However, you will see them again later.
To begin, go to ¡Viva la Webquest! and follow the directions for the assignment. Go to the navigation bar on the upper left side of the page, and read the introduction. What could Toussaint L'Ouverture and Napoleon Bonaparte possibly have in common? The island of Haiti, of course, which at this time, was a French colony. Read about the Haitian Revolution.
Now, turn your attention to the Libertadores of South America, Simon Bolivar and José San Martin. In fact, you'll learn why Bolivar is called the "George Washington" of South America. Begin your reading of the Libertadores. Once you complete your webquest research, read José de San Martín (1778-1850) to find more information about San Martin.
