A cover letter is a letter that is sent with a résumé to a potential employer. It can be mailed, emailed, or faxed. The purpose of a cover letter is to introduce yourself and accompany the résumé.
What are the parts of a cover letter?
In Paragraph 1, explain why you are writing. Name the job for which you are applying, and tell how you found out about the opening. DO NOT begin with "I am writing . . ." The person reading the letter knows that YOU are writing!
In Paragraph 2, give your general qualifications. However, do not go into great detail; your résumé already has the specifics listed. Mention your résumé. (LATER ON in life, it may be necessary to have another paragraph here to highlight things in your résumé. However, as a high school student, the second paragraph should be sufficient to list your qualifications.)
In Paragraph 3, ask for an interview and mention how you could be contacted. Close with a nice comment.
