There are five basic parts of a résumé.

  • Personal information.  This information is usually located at the top of the page.  It includes the person’s name and contact information—like address, phone numbers, and e-mail address.

  • Goal or objective.  This should be a short statement about your career or educational goals.

  • Educational background.  Include schools you have attended, starting with most recent.  In this section, mention honors or awards received.  Also, you should mention job-related accomplishments and courses.

  • Work experience.  List employers, beginning with most recent.  Give the time period worked and duties performed. If you don’t have paid work, list volunteer experiences.

  • References.  List two or three references.  Employers are preferred, but persons who can attest to your character or attitude would be good as well.
