The issues facing the presidents of the 1970s proved to be quite daunting. The economy was in the midst of a difficult recession, relations with foreign powers were tense, and the American people were jaded in their view and support for the government. In the midst of this atmosphere, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter gallantly attempted to solve the nation's ills. Neither generated great support among the American people, but both made strides in redirecting the nation's course away from scandal and corruption and towards a path of recovery.
