The rationale for Watergate began long before the break-in ever occurred. Nixon's deep paranoia led he and his staff to make questionable, and sometimes illegal decisions. The break-in of the Democratic National Committee's headquarters and subsequent cover-up sent 40 people to prison, led to the resignation of the President of the United States, and shattered the public's trust and faith in elected government officials.
