Have you heard of D-day? This photograph was taken during the event in history known as "D-day." D-day took place on June 6, 1944. The American soldiers in the photo are leaving an amphibious craft to storm the beaches at Normandy, France to take France back from the Germans. Have you ever seen the movie Saving Private Ryan? The opening scene of the movie is a very realistic and graphic depiction of what happened at D-day.

After the signing of the Atlantic Charter, Allied forces turned their attention to North Africa; an area that had been under Axis control since 1936. The plan for victory in Europe was to start in North Africa where the enemy was the weakest, work their way up through Italy, eventually storm the beaches to re-take France, and close-in on Germany from all directions with the Soviets closing in from the East.
