A giant Uncle Sam, lying on the ground and restrained by ties that have various acronyms written on them. Many people are running over and across Uncle Sam while he looks at them angrily.

New Deal legislation had friends and foes. Conservatives generally felt New Deal legislation encouraged laziness and dependency upon the government. Others felt the New Deal did not go far enough to help those in need. Although the economy was in shambles in the 1930s, not all was terrible. Radio dominated the entertainment sector with sporting events, soap operas, and FDR's fireside chats. People also found the movies to be an escape from the harsh realities of the Great Depression with an average of 70 million attending each week.
