The Great Depression
American life during the Great Depression had drastically changed from the "flappers and speakeasies" of the 1920s. By 1932, nearly one-quarter of the work force was out of work. Charities set up soup kitchens and bread lines to handout food to those in need. Families, who could no longer afford their rent, moved in together in crowded apartments, or faced homelessness.
