Lesson 2.01 Origins of the Progressive Era

Throughout this unit on the Progressive Era, you will be responsible for creating a Unit 2 Progressive Era PowerPoint presentation that highlights the major elements of the period. Your PowerPoint will have a total of 16 slides. Begin the presentation now, add slides to it at the end of each lesson, and submit the presentation at the end of the Unit.

Information for the slides may be found within the lesson and from outside research. You are required to include at leat two outside resources. When you include information from outside sources be sure to include the correct citation information. A Works Cited slide will be your last slide. All information on the slides should be written in your own words and phrases.

The presentation also needs to include at least 7 photos or pictures. These photos may be placed as you deem appropriate. All photos should be correctly cited with the web address where the photo was located.

Create the following slides to correspond to Lesson 2.01:

Slide 1- Title Slide- create a title for the overall presentation, include your name, and a graphic element that captures the essence of the Progressive Era. This graphic element does not count as one of your seven photos.
Slide 2-Overview- define the Progressive Era, explain the reasons for it, and introduce it as an overall topic
Slide 3- Muckrakers- define who the muckrakers were, list noteworthy muckraking individuals, and outline their impact during the Progressive Era
Slide 4- President Roosevelt- cover the domestic policies of President Roosevelt including, but not limited to- conservation, trust-busting, Hepburn Act, and the Pure Food and Drug Act

Many muckrakers exposed their corruption through their writings in books or articles, while others tried to "shock" Americans into action with stark photography.

For this assignment, assume the role of a modern-day muckraker and reflect on a societal ill that you believe needs exposure. Examples of societal ills are endless; it could be a local issue in your city or school or a much broader issue such as pollution, education reform, or gun control.

Using the same "shock" method as the muckrakers, write a brief article that makes our ACCESS community aware of the problems. Your article should be thought provoking and informed; remember you are trying to persuade us into action!

This essay should be organized in a document and include the following elements:
1) Title - create a catchy heading to immediately grab attention
2) 4-5 sentences that describe the problem you've chosen to highlight and your reasons for calling for action. Use words and language that are captivating and inspiring! Be sure all of the words used are yours too!
3) One or two photographic images that support your cause
4) Works Cited - a list all of the reference materials used, including where you got your images
