Introduction
Does your family get along all the time?
Would it be nice...or would it be boring... if everyone agreed all the time?
Government and politics can be similar to a family situation. There should be a variety of "other" voices or things could get very boring and possibly even unfair. If there were no people who disagreed with the status quo, nothing would ever change. Throughout our history, Americans have typically been willing to work through and even embrace our differences. This has made the nation strong and brought about positive change. However, there have been a few issues that have threatened to divide us.
Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Describe and compare the plantation system in the south and industrialization in the north
- Explain how sectionalism grew as a result of the two economic systems.
The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: United States History I: Objective: 9.
This lesson incorporates the following Literacy Standards: R3, R6, R9, W1a, W3, W4, and W10
