As you begin preparing for your role as an onstage performer, it is important that you understand the terminology associated with stage positioning and movement. Within the stage directions of a play’s script, or as directed by a play’s director, specific instructions on where an actor/actress is to enter, exit, stand, move, position themselves in relation to the audience, and so forth, are given.

Without understanding this terminology, you will be unable to follow these directions, thus limiting your abilities as an actor/actress to make a proper “dramatic effect”.

At the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify basic stage directions, including upstage, center, downstage, apron, backstage, and wings
  • Demonstrate and differentiate between a variety of actor positions or profiles, including one-fourth, one-half, full, and back.
