Introduction
Like class, the social definitions of race and ethnicity still affect people's place and status in a stratification system, not only in this country but throughout the world. High incomes, a good command of English, and hard-earned professional credentials do not always override racial and ethnic stereotypes or protect those who fit them from the sting of racism.
In this lesson, you will explore the differences between race and ethnicity. Understanding the differences between the terms is important for the next lesson on prejudice and discrimination.
Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Distinguish between the terms race and ethnicity.
- Identify different racial and ethnic groups in America today.
The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 7.3.
