Introduction

When you hear the term "poverty," what comes to mind? Do you personally know people who live in poverty? Do you personally live in poverty? When you hear the term "social class," what comes to mind? What social class are you in? Do you believe that people can overcome poverty and rise in social class? It is important to remember that the concept of poverty and social mobility can be a deeply personal topic. Keep that in mind as you complete this lesson and work on the tasks.

In this lesson, you will explore how poverty is defined and the impact that poverty has on social mobility.

 

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Explain the relationship between social stratification and social class, including intergenerational social mobility and structural occupational change.
  • Explain the differences between an open class system and a closed caste system.
