Introduction

In every society, there are people who follow rules and people who do not. Both groups tend to pass judgment on the other, but the reality is that everyone truly belongs to both groups. For example, a rule follower might slip up from time to time and a rule breaker conforms to rules from time to time.

In this lesson, you will have the chance to learn more about what it means to be deviant and the theories behind why deviant behavior occurs in a society.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify antisocial behaviors, including social deviance, addiction, terrorism, anomie, and related arguments for the strain theory and the conflict theory.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 4.
