Introduction

Have you ever been frustrated dealing with the policies and procedures of a business? A school? The government or another formal organization? Did you ever wonder why formal establishments have so many rules and regulations and why people rarely bend (or break) those rules?

As members of society, you have to deal with formal organizations and bureaucracies all the time! Sometimes you are probably thankful for their structure and policies. Othertimes, you might get frustrated and wish for changes. In this lesson, you will explore why formal organizations are set up the way they are...for better and for worse.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify the characteristics of formal organizations and bureaucracies.
  • Relate the importance of group dynamics, including leadership and decision-making.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 7.2.
