Introduction
Throughout this lesson, you will learn about the vairous levels of society - from the social structure at the macro-level all the way down to the social interactions at the micro-level.
At the macro-level, social structure is:
- The complex framework of societal institutions
- The social practices that make up a society
- The organizational elements that establish limits on people's behavior
- Essential for the survival of society and for the well-being of individuals
- A social web of familial support and social relationships that connects each of us to the larger society
At the micro-level, social interaction is:
- The process by which people act toward or respond to other people
- The process by which people respond to other people
- The foundation for all relationships and groups in society
Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Define social structure.
- Identify and explain the various components of social structure.
- Explain the difference between status ascription and status achievement.
