Introduction

Why do you act the way you act? Who and what influences your behaviors? For most teenagers, the answer is complex and most likely includes all of the following:

  • Family values
  • Upbringing
  • Opinions of friends
  • School
  • Media (TV, internet)
  • As you age, different agents have varying degrees of influence. For example, when you are young, you most likely went along with everything your parents believed, but now or perhaps in future years, you might begin to believe something different.

In this lesson, you will explore the agents of socialization and the impact they have on you as you go through the different stages of life.

Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

    • Determine the role of family, school, peer groups, and the media in socializing young people.
    • Identify the stages of development across life cycles, including birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood, middle age, and late adulthood.
    • Explain the process of socialization in adulthood.

The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 3.5, 3.6, & 6.
