Introduction
Consider this: if an infant is left unattended in the forest, would the child survive? Do we really need other people? A child might survive in a sense, but in order for someone to become a member of society, he or she needs interaction from other people - they need socialization. Ultimately, our dependence on interacting with people continues throughout our life. No matter how independent we see outselves, our dependence on others never goes away.
Following successful completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Analyze the consequences of social isolation.
- Illustrate key concepts of socialization, including self-concept, looking-glass self, significant others, and role-taking.
The above objectives correspond with the Alabama Course of Study: Sociology Objectives: 1.1 & 3.4.
