Task

Cultural Diffusion through Food

One of the easiest places to see cultural diffusion in the United States is our restaurant selection. Our country has a wide variety of restaurants stemming from a wide variety of cultures. For this Task:

1) Think of one of your favorite restaurants that features food from a culture other than your own. For example, if you are Hispanic, you might choose a restaurant that serves your favorite Asian dish.

2) Write a 10-sentence review of that restaurant. Your review should include and describe at least three dishes you have tried. It should also describe the décor and atmosphere in terms of the culture the restaurant represents. The following questions might help guide your review:

  • Does the décor reflect that culture?
  • Do the employees know enough about the culture to guide you through the menu?
  • Do you think this restaurant would be a good place to start for someone unfamiliar with that culture and type of food?

3) Post your review to 1.07 Cultural Diffusion Discussion. The subject of your post should be the name of the restaurant and the city in which it is located (ex. Ol'Heidelberg in Huntsville). Remember that your post should be at least 10 complete sentences.

4) After you post your review, read other student reviews and make a response to at least two reviews. You can comment on their review, add ideas to their review, or pose questions about their review. Be sure to back up any of your opinions with well thought-out reasoning, and be respectful of other perspectives.

Complete 1.07 Vocab Review. The review activity covers terms from this lesson as well as Lesson 1.06. Submit your completed work to 1.07 Vocab Review Dropbox.
