Discussion
Select 1 viewpoint about the safety of electromagnetic radiation from the following statements.
- The benefits of UV radiation and UV exposure - including tanning and vitamin D absorption - outweigh any potential risk, so sunscreen use isn't that important.
- Because gamma rays can alter human DNA and cells, they should not be used in the medical field because of potential risks.
- The long-term effects of cellphone radiation have not been researched enough; therefore strict limits should be set on how long someone can use a cellphone during the day.
Once you have selected your viewpoint, conduct some research on your topic. You may use the links provided in the next tab, AVL resources, and information you find from a reputable source online. You want to find evidence that supports your argument and does not support your argument.
After you have researched BOTH sides of your statement, create a list of pros and cons. You should identify 3 supporting points (or pros) and 3 opposing points (or cons). Using this information, write the following:
- 1 paragraph supporting your chosen viewpoint (minimum of 5 sentences)
- 1 paragraph arguing against your chosen viewpoint (minimum of 5 sentences)
- 1 paragraph of 2-3 sentences indicating which "side" you are taking and why
Post your 3 paragraphs to the 9.06 How Safe is EM Radiation? Discussion.
You should then reply to at least 3 classmates' posts. Some response topics include:
- Do you agree or disagree with your classmate's opinion? Why or why not?
- Do you think your classmate's argument was well-reasoned or articulated well? Why or why not?
- Were you surprised by any of the supporting or opposing arguments? Did you learn something new from their post?
Once you receive comments on your original post, reply to those comments at least twice.
